Tea Picking Holiday

From Masai villages to tea plantations, Kenya’s culture offering is exceptional. Many safari packages still limit their cultural content to bolt-on trips to local communities, where visitors can sit and chew the fat with local herdsmen but to get the real flavour of Africa you can now go off the beaten track.

By using local Masai warrior guides you do not have to sit in the back of a Land Rover all day, guest head into the bush on foot for intimate guided walks, with the Masai leader providing a fascinating insight into the flora and fauna, all derived from knowledge handed down through the generations.

Away from the savannah, there are even more hands-on experiences to be had.  At Kerich, in the south-west country, for example, guest can spendtime picking fresh tea under an enormous African sky.  Kenya was once the world’s third largest producer of tea and coffee to India and Sri Lanka

The plantation is accessible from Nairobi, the long drive is well worth it and in the town itself there is even a tea hotel, which was built by Brooke Bond back in 1950, it’s now privately owned, with guests able to take trips to local volcanic hot pools, as well as spending a day picking PG Tips.

Proactive Kenya now over the rift

Increased marketing funds, a major consumer and trade campaign and a series of fam trips shall keep visitor numbers to Kenya bouyant in 2010.  The Kenya Tourist Board hopes its promotional budget will grow by up to 50 per cent for the year starting 1st July and if the funding materialises it will be used to build upon an encouraging first quarter of 2010 when UK visitor numbers grew by 25,000 over the same period in 2009.
UK VISITORS STILL THE BIGGEST OVERSEAS MARKET FOR KENYA

The Kenya Tourist Board has reported a 13% year-on-year increase in UK visitors to 38,500 for the first quarter of 2010.  The UK remains the largest single overseas market for Kenya with a 14.5% market share on visitors.

Because of the drastic temperatures and climate variations from region to region and even throughout a single day, , visitors should pack for a mixture of hot, cold, wet and dusty conditions.  Plenty of light comfortable clothing is best.  Visitors should consider the type of activities they plan to do and pack accordingly.  For walking safaris or game viewing on foot sturdy hiking boots are best.  Also wear neutral coloured lightweight clothing- avoiding bright or vividly patterned clothes.  Hats and sun protection cream is highly recommended.

For visitors staying in lodges or tented safari camps, a torch may come in handy.  And don’t forget binoculars, and your camera.
Beach holidays are the same the world over so take clothing that you waould take on any beach holiday.

Between the open plains of the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, thousands of wildebeest and zebras migrate to greener pastures as the seasons change and the circle of life and death continues. Predators follow the wildebeest migration closely, waiting for an opportunity to strike weak prey as they make their way into different territories. Read the rest of this entry »
